Box ↔ Microsoft SharePoint synchronization

Keep documents and metadata in sync between Box and Microsoft SharePoint — the two enterprise content clouds most organisations end up running side by side. DMS Sync Manager bridges them on a schedule you control, so teams on either platform always see the current set without anyone copying files by hand.

How it works

Three steps to keep Box and Microsoft SharePoint in sync.

01

Connect Box and Microsoft SharePoint

Box authenticates with OAuth 2.0 against your Box enterprise. Microsoft SharePoint connects with OAuth 2.0 against Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), either as a delegated user or app-only via client credentials.

02

Map Box folders to SharePoint libraries

Pick a Box folder as the source (or destination) and a SharePoint document library on the other side. Box metadata templates map to SharePoint columns so the destination stays searchable on the same fields.

03

Set rules and cadence

Filter by file type, label, last-modified date, or column/metadata value. Schedule hourly, daily, or on demand. Each sync run produces a complete activity log.

What customers do with it

A few real-world scenarios.

  • Mirror Box-managed contracts and correspondence into SharePoint for teams that live in Microsoft 365.
  • Push SharePoint-managed project documents into Box for external clients and partners who standardise on Box.
  • Run a one-shot migration between Box and SharePoint when consolidating onto a single content platform.

"Projects rarely fail in design — they fail when teams can't trust they're looking at the latest version."

Frequently asked questions

Are Box metadata templates mapped to SharePoint columns?

Yes. Each sync task lets you map Box metadata template fields to SharePoint columns and vice-versa, so the destination library is searchable and filterable by the same fields.

How is version history handled on both sides?

Each new revision arrives as a new version in the destination, preserving Box's native version history and SharePoint's native versioning respectively.

Performance with large files?

DMS Sync uses Box's chunked upload for files over 50 MB and SharePoint's chunked upload sessions for files over 4 MB, so large files transfer reliably on both sides.

Can we run this as a one-time migration only?

Yes. Set the sync task to one-shot mode and run once. It backfills the entire folder set into the destination with metadata mapping intact, then archives itself.

Where is the data stored?

Sync workers run in eu-west-1 (Ireland). Files transit through the workers but are not retained; only metadata and audit logs are stored. Box (via Box Zones) and Microsoft 365 both offer EU data residency.
